The Art & Legacy of Tango Fantasía
Argentine tango was born in the embrace—a living conversation shaped by music, improvisation, and human connection. From this social tradition emerged Tango Fantasía, the highest artistic expression of Tango de Salón, where the poetry of the milonga found its voice on the stage.
Unlike contemporary stage productions, Tango Fantasía is not defined by spectacle or acrobatics. As renowned maestro Eduardo Arquimbau explains, Tango Fantasía is an artistic elaboration of the salon tango of the 1940s. It expands the vocabulary of social tango through dramatic pauses, elegant poses, ganchos, high boleos, adornments, and expressive interpretation—all of which originate within the tradition of Argentine tango itself. Arquimbau further distinguishes Tango Fantasía from Stage Tango (Tango Escenario): while Stage Tango often incorporates lifts, jumps, ballet, modern dance, and acrobatic elements, Tango Fantasía remains fundamentally an extension of authentic Tango de Salón. It is an artistic language, not merely a performance format. Tango Fantasía is both the highest artistic expression of Tango de Salón and the living foundation from which modern Stage Tango evolved.
It forms the bridge between the intimacy of the milonga and the theatrical language of the stage, preserving the embrace, musicality, improvisation, and emotional authenticity of social tango while expanding its expressive possibilities. Its evolution spans more than a century of Argentine tango. El Cachafaz (José Benito Ovidio Bianquet) established the earliest tradition of tango exhibition in the early twentieth century. During the Golden Age, masters such as Virulazo, Pepito Avellaneda, and Miguel Balmaceda enriched the expressive vocabulary of exhibition tango while remaining deeply connected to the social dance. In the post-war era, Juan Carlos Copes and María Nieves brought Tango Fantasía to international stages, establishing it as one of Argentina's great theatrical art forms. At the same time, Antonio Todaro developed a technical and pedagogical system that became the foundation for generations of professional dancers. Over the decades, successive generations of Argentine masters have continued to preserve, refine, and expand the artistic language of Tango Fantasía while remaining faithful to its roots.
Today, Tango Fantasía continues to live through the masters who have dedicated their lives to preserving and transmitting this remarkable tradition. In Buenos Aires, legendary milonguero couple Nito García and Elba Sottile, now in their nineties, continue to teach Tango Fantasía, passing its knowledge directly from one generation to the next.
More than a style of dance, Tango Fantasía is a living bridge between the milonga and the theatre, between tradition and innovation, and between the masters of the past and the artists of the future.

Who Is Bringing This Living Tradition to Toronto?
This residency offers a rare opportunity to learn through a direct artistic lineage passed down from the pioneers of Tango Fantasía. The visiting maestro trained directly with legendary masters Pepito Avellaneda, Miguel Balmaceda, and Juan Carlos Copes, inheriting not only their techniques, but also their artistic philosophy, musical sensitivity, and vision of Tango Fantasía as the highest artistic expression of Tango de Salón.
Over decades of performance, teaching, and artistic research, he has developed his own distinctive approach—renowned for its clarity, precision, elegance, musicality, and expressive beauty. Rooted in tradition yet continually evolving, his work demonstrates that Tango Fantasía is not a historical artifact, but a living art form capable of speaking to every new generation.
As the inaugural Guest Artist of the Dancing Tree Studio Artist Residency, he comes not simply to teach choreography or preserve tradition, but to share a living artistic lineage while exploring where that lineage can lead next.
Program A – Argentine Tango Immersion
Program A invites dancers of all levels to journey from the foundations of Argentine tango to the artistry of Tango Fantasía. Beginning with the essential principles of Tango de Salón—embrace, connection, musicality, technique, and improvisation—the program gradually unfolds into the expressive language of Tango Fantasía, revealing how artistic expression grows naturally from authentic social tango. More than mastering movements, participants experience the philosophy, culture, and artistic spirit that have shaped Argentine tango across generations.
Program B – Performance & Creative Lab
Program B extends this journey beyond learning into creation through the Tree Family Creative Lab. Selected dancers collaborate in choreography, performance, and interdisciplinary artistic exploration inspired by the language of Tango Fantasía. Participation is by audition or invitation and limited to 8–10 couples to ensure an intensive and collaborative creative process. Dancers interested in joining are encouraged to register early for an introductory information meeting. Individual registrations are welcome, and partner matching will be arranged whenever possible to achieve a balanced ensemble.
As the first Tree Family Creative Lab ensemble, this experimental project explores how learning can grow into creation, planting the seeds for future performances and original productions at Dancing Tree Studio.

Five Weeks • Two Complementary Programs
Program A — Argentine Tango Immersion
Open to all levels, from strong tango foundations to musicality, connection, improvisation, and the exploration of traditional tango styles. Participants will also discover the artistry of Tango Fantasía—the theatrical stage form of Argentine tango that combines the elegance of social tango with expressive choreography and performance.
Program B — Performance & Creative Lab (8 -10 couples)
For dancers pursuing artistic development through performance and creation. Explore the history, aesthetics, and artistic language of Tango Fantasía, refine its essential techniques and stage vocabulary, and collaborate in the creation of an original ensemble work.

Argentine Tango Immersion is a five-week educational program designed to strengthen participants' understanding of Argentine Tango through movement, music, tradition, and human connection.
Through three themed workshops each week, participants explore the walk, technique, musicality, tango styles, and artistic expression while discovering the cultural heritage that continues to inspire dancers around the world.

Dancing Tree Performance Lab - Tango Fantasía Ensemble
By Audition or Invitation (8–10 Selected Couples)
The Dancing Tree Performance Lab is a collaborative artistic development program for selected intermediate and advanced dancers interested in exploring the expressive possibilities of Tango Fantasía.
Meeting three times each week, the ensemble explores movement vocabulary, musical interpretation, choreography, and stage composition through a shared creative process inspired by Alejandro Aquino's artistic experience and the interdisciplinary vision of Dancing Tree Studio. The program culminates in a studio sharing that celebrates artistic exploration, collaboration, and community.
